In the 1990’s the Italian hip hop scene emerged with Articolo 31 from Milan, whose style was mainly influenced by East Coast rap. Many of the other early hip hop groups were politically-oreintated, like 99 Posse who later became more influenced by British hip hop.
Hip hop is especially characteristic of southern Italy. La Fossa from Sardinia, is one of the more recent hip hop groups to emerge with more of a gangster rapper style to their music.
Patchanka, is a style of music in Italy which many bands play and is a mixture of traditional music, punk, reggae, rock and political lyrics. Modena City Ramblers, a popular band known for their mix of Irish, Italian, punk, reggae and many other forms of music.
