Italian fashion began when Count Giorgini arranged a fashion show in Florence in February 1951 for an international audience. From then on he opened up his palace to stage fashion shows for the noble classes. It was usually only members of the nobility that wore these fine clothes as it would be more likely that they would be the ones attending museum openings etc whereby these elaborate dresses could be presented in the best way possible. In the Sixties, fashion was seen as creation and design and women could wear whatever they liked to interpret their character. Stylish low-cost manufactured garments were made thus enabling many women from all over the world to buy the latest fashions. Milan which is known as the fashion capital of the world became a landmark in the 70's/80's. To date, major fashion shows are held in Milan bringing many of the big designers to show their latest regeneration of styles. The way that you dress has always played a major part through the years, when first meeting someone, it is the first thing that you notice about them. For italians, your social status is confirmed by what you wear! |
