The firefly is a small nocturnal flying beetle that emits a glow from its body due to a natural chemical stored in its abdomen. These bugs are from the same family as glowworms and are the only winged luminescent bug. They are approximately 2cm long and have a lifespan of around 2 months. They are usually light brown in colour and can be found in the summer evenings in a variety of warm humid environments (they require a moist environment in order to survive). They feed on pollen, larvae, slugs, snails and worms. The adult fireflies are responsible for the intermittent light (which is also used as a means of commnunication between this species). A beautiful sight to observe when there are lots of them flying around resembling twinkling stars in the night sky. If you want to find out more info about this interesting bug click here.
