Preventing Snake Bites

The best way to deal with a snake bite is to avoid it altogether! Please see the following precautions:

  1. Wear boots and long trousers when you go hiking or camping.
  2. When hiking or camping take a walking stick with you which you can use to investigate areas that you cannot see.
  3. Use a torch if hiking at night.
  4. Never reach into holes, stacks of firewood, or under rocks as these are all common hideouts for snakes.
  5. Be alert when you are near water and long grass as most snakes hunt in these environments. Keep an eye on young children playing near these environments (if your child is old enough to understand, warn them of the dangers of snakes).
  6. Look at where you sit and step carefully.
  7. Do no handle a live or dead snake. Snakes often appear to be dead even when they're not.  Dead snakes can still bite up to approximately one hour after their death.
  8. Never try to scare a snake away as this will only antagonize the snake.  It is better for you to slowly distance yourself from the snake.
