 Gravedona is situated on the western side of the lake, further north than Menaggio, it is a great base for exploring the northern section. In medieval times this town was the senior partner of the Tre Pievi (the Three Parishes), the other two being Dongo and Sorico. There are some beautiful buildings to be found here which are now occupied by the town council. The church of Santa Maria del Tiglio built on the site of a 5th-century baptistery still shows sections of the original mosaic flooring.
