Celebration of Halloween and All Saints Day

Halloween-2009-5-PumpkinMany people will have enjoyed the festivities of Halloween on October 31st which derives from an ancient Celtic tradition but this is also known as 'All Hallows Eve', the lead-up to All Saints Day or Tutti i Santi Ognissnati as it is known in Italy.

This is a Catholic holiday commemorating the Saint Martyrs and is celebrated on 1st November. The 2nd November is known as All Souls Day which is a day to honour loved ones who are deceased.

Italians celebrate the two holidays together and following Mass at church the families then proceed to the cemetery to visit the graves of their loved ones and take autumn flowers to decorate the graves. The All Souls' Feast with family and friends usually consists of foods made with peas or lentils (known as Soul Food). Many homes will set empty places and leave the door open for the souls of the deceased. The feast is brought to a close with theĀ a sweet biscuit known as "Ossi di Morto" or "Bones of the Dead."

Many towns in northern and central Italy celebrate the seasonal change with truffle and chestnut fairs during the first week of November.
