Flights to and from the UK and Europe have been cancelled until further notice due to the 'ash cloud' that has travelled across the skies from the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokul.

It is unsafe to fly in these conditions as the ash from the volcano can cause damage to the aeroplanes and also their engines. Many airlines have taken this precaution of cancelling flights in order to guarantee the safety of their passengers. Unfortunately this has caused chaos with many tourists being left stranded at airports as well as hindering business travellers and cargo transports in Europe.

The closing of all North Italian airports including Linate and Malpensa, has directly affected the tourists of Lake Como, Italy who were unable to arrive at their holiday destination or indeed return home. Lake Como hotels and guesthouses have received numerous cancellations over the past few days.

Both Malpensa and Linate airport have announced on their homepage this morning the ongoing closure of airspace in Northern Italy from 09:00 hours today until 08:00 hours on Tuesday 20th April.
