Avalanche on Mount Galbiga, Lake Como, Italy |

A man was killed on Saturday 14th March in an avalanche on the slopes south of Mount Galbiga, in the Ossuccio area.
The avalanche swept up a couple who were hiking, fortunately the woman succeeded in raising the alarm whilst her companion was submerged in the snow. Search parties with dogs and the staff of the Alpine Aid of Lecco were immediately dispatched to look for the hikers. Unfortunately by the time the search parties found the man he was already dead. The woman was transported to hospital by the 118 helicopter and is not in a serious condition. The avalanche happened around 15:40 on two peaks and swept up the hikers who were in the vicinity of the Boffalora shelter. It is thought that the avalanche happened due to the recent high temperatures. In the past weeks, along the northern ridge of Mount Galbiga an avalanche had fallen down the mountain and arrived very close to the inhabitants of Porlezza. |
