Every autumn, the region holds the Giro di Lombardia (Tour of Lombardy), a world-famous cycling competition for professional cyclists. The first Giro di Lombardia took place in 1905. This one-day classic covers the hills around Lake Como, making for an exciting race of break-aways and hairpin turns.Please note: biking on the main roads around Lake Como can be dangerous as there are many tunnels and some sections of road are very narrow (not to mention hairpin bends!) If you must cycle on these roads then please ensure that you are wearing the appropriate clothing along with a bicycle helmet and check to see if your bicycle has lights/reflectors on it. If possible wear a vest with reflective strips.
