 Hiring a boat is a great way to explore Lake Como and gives you the opportunity to see some of the villas such as; Villa Erba, Villa D’Este, Villa Balbainello and also private villas owned by the Versace family and George Clooney, which are virtually impossible to see from the road.You can hire a 40HP boat without a license; anything over this engine size requires a license. There are various boat rental companies around the lake; Cernobbio in the south, and in Dongo, Domaso, Gera Lario, and Sorico in the north.
If you would prefer to relax and let someone else do the driving, then there are private companies in Menaggio and Bellagio that do boat tours on the lake. If you are travelling in a group this can be more cost effective on these tours.
There are several docks/berths all along the Lake shores. Some are well-equipped but some of them are in bad condition. There are good berths near the camping grounds (most of which are situated in the northern part of the lake) for motorboats and small sailboats; Dongo, Domaso, Lezzeno.
