It is not possible to swim in the southern part of the lake due to pollution through heavy industry and neglect. However, filters are continuously being installed and thanks to new EU laws regarding water pollution, Italy is slowly but surely taking the necessary action to solve this problem. If you are staying at one of the luxury hotels on Lake Como, then you may have access to an outdoor swimming pool. Alternatively, if you do not fancy swimming in the lake there are a number of ‘lidos’ scattered all around the lake, some of which have outdoor pools open to the public;

| Windsurfing The northern part of the lake is the area to go to if you want to try watersports. Domaso, on the west side and Dervio, on the east are the two main places that have courses (or to hire equipment on [ ... ] |

The northern towns like Domaso and Gravedona are the best places to go swimming as there are more beaches (mostly pebble) available with lots more space. This area has the cleanest water because it is close to the Adda River that runs into the lake.
