Insurance

The EHIC replaced the E111 form in 2006. The E111 form is no longer valid.

When travelling abroad to the EEA (European Economic Area) countries or Switzerland you need the EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). If you were to have an accident or become ill whilst on holiday, this card entitles you to receive the necessary state-provided medical healthcare for free or at a reduced cost.

  • People who are normally resident in the UK, aged 16 or over can apply for the EHIC. There may be some restrictions depending on your nationality.
  • Each person in your group requires a card.
  • Travel insurance is still required to cover healthcare costs.

You still need insurance to cover you for all eventualities as the state-provided healthcare overseas may not cover things you receive free on the NHS. The EHIC does not mean that you are insured!
