Driving from the UK/Ireland can be enjoyable as long as you plan your route in advance. The advantage of taking your own car allows you to do some sightseeing in other countries as well as enabling you to tour around the lake and other small mountain villages that you might not have visited otherwise. There are various websites such as the RAC which will help plan your route for you which you can print off and take with you. Please note that if you are travelling through Switzerland, you will need to buy the road tax sticker which costs €40-€50. This can be purchased at any service station in Switzerland. From our own experience of driving from the UK, we travelled down to Newcastle and took the overnight dfdseaways ferry across to Amsterdam and then planned our route to drive mostly through Germany, which was a very straightforward drive and the transport cafes serve excellent food. |
