Taking your pet (animale domestico) abroad has become more and more popular in recent years. However, before doing so, you must ensure that you have a pet-passport, relevant certificates (health and insurance) and up-to-date vaccinations/boosters including a vaccination against rabies. Please ensure that you have all documentation needed for your pet if travelling through other countries on your way to Italy.
A good majority of people in Italy own dogs, and to my amazement, many restaurants/bars allow dogs to come in whilst their owners dine! Many of the self-catering apartments/villas as well as some hotels accept pets (but be sure to check this information with the holiday rental company/hotel before booking your holiday).
The dogs in Italy are often treated like people and are adorned with the latest fashion items for dogs; who is wearing the latest four-legged winter jacket by Dachshund & Chihuahua! It is quite a wonder to see a variety of small dogs in clothing or being carried by their owner in their fancy little doggy bags that match nicely with their owners outfit!
In some Italian cities, the streets are bejewelled with little ‘calling cards’ , so mind your step! However, there is a fine of approximately €30 if you do not clean-up after your pet.
We hope that the information we have provided in this section is of some help to you.
