There are numerous tv and radio stations that cover the whole of Italy, although some may vary from region to region. RAI (the national network) was the only producer of radio news and programmes, they began transmitting in the 1920's and by the 1950's, RAI was also the only television network transmitting news and prime time programmes. It wasn't until into the 1950's that television became popular in Italy. The three main networks that dominate the television are:
