Hiring a boat is a great way to explore Lake Como and gives you the opportunity to see some of the villas such as; Villa Erba, Villa D’Este, Villa Balbianello and also private villas owned by the Versace family and George Clooney, which are virtually impossible to see from the road.
You can hire a 40HP boat without a license; anything over this engine size requires a license. There are various boat rental companies around the lake; Cernobbio, Dongo, Domaso, Gera Lario and Sorico.
If you would prefer to relax and let someone else do the driving, then there are private companies in Menaggio and Bellagio that do boat tours on the lake. A boat tour is more cost effective if you are travelling in a group.
There are several docks and berths all along the lake shores; some of which are better equipped than others. You will often find good berths near the camping grounds (most of which are situated in the northern part of the lake) for motorboats and small sailboats; Dongo, Domaso, Lezzeno.
