Malpensa Airport in Italy has good transport connections. You can take the train from Malpensa to Como easily as the train station is located at Terminal 1. However don’t worry if you arrive at Terminal 2 as directly outside the entrance to the building you can take the free Malpensa Shuttle Bus that runs between the two terminals every 15 mins through the day and every 30 mins through the night (24 hours).
Route 1 – Malpensa Airport to Como Lago Nord train station (with changeover at Saronno) Take the ‘Malpensa Express train’ for Milan at Terminal 1 but make sure you get off at Saronno and then catch the train from here to Como Lago Nord station. Approxiamte cost is €9 and the whole journey takes around 2 hours. This route is probably the best as it is less complicated and slightly quicker. Remember to purchase your train tickets prior to boarding the train; ticket machines or ticket booths located at Terminal 1.
Route 2 – Malpensa Airport to Milan Central Station to Como San Giovanni Station Take the ‘Malpensa Shuttle Bus’ to Milan Central Station (journey is approximately 30 minutes) and then board the train for Como San Giovanni Station which takes around 40 minutes. Directly outside the San Giovanni Train Station in Como you can find taxis and buses (C10 bus will take you to destinations on the westside of the lake; Argegno, Tremezzo, Menaggio etc).
Route 3 – Destinations on eastside of the Lake Como by train (Lecco, Mandello del Lario, Varenna, Bellano, Colico) Take the Malpensa Shuttle Bus to Milan Central Station. Buses leave every 20 minutes and the journey takes approximately 50 minutes . Ticket costs around €6. From Milan Central Station take the train bound for Sondrio or Tirano which stops at the following places on the way; Lecco, Mandello del Lario, Varenna, Bellano and Colico. The train journey takes approximatey 40 minutes to reach Lecco, 1 hour to Varenna and 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach Colico (the furthest point on the east side of the lake from Milan). A ticket to Varenna from this train station will cost around €5. There are also trains running between Lecco and Colico and stopping at a number of less well known stations along the east side of the lake. It is possible to purchase your train ticket to Varenna Esio Station at Malpensa Airport to avoid queuing at Milan Central Station. The trains run regularly from this station to Varenna. The ticket office at Milan Central Station is located on ground level while train platforms are on the upper level.
